Quantum technology
Quantum technology will change computing, sensing and communication forever – heralding a transformation of business and society. But to achieve success, it must be applied in the right places in just the right way.
How will it change your world? The answer is not straightforward. Firstly, quantum is not going to solve every problem tomorrow; adoption will be gradual. Yet a wait-and-see approach won’t cut it. The opportunity is to understand where emerging quantum capabilities could create meaningful advantage for your business, when they will become viable and how they can be engineered into the wider systems to create real value.
What we do
There are plenty of extraordinary claims in quantum technology. At CC, we help you cut through the hype and understand where quantum can genuinely make a difference.
As the deep tech powerhouse of Capgemini, CC’s multidisciplinary team combines deep tech expertise with commercial understanding to identify the opportunities worth pursuing, to then bring together the science and engineering needed to realise them.
Quantum computing
With its radical computation, quantum can solve the unsolvable. Quantum computers work very differently to classical computers. It is a fundamentally different way of computing: hardware, software and algorithms all have to be rethought.
Realising the business benefits of quantum computing will be hard – and require a radical approach to computer science. Quantum computing is built on quantum superposition. In conventional computer systems each bit is either zero or one, but in quantum computers ‘qubits’ can be set to zero and one at the same time. A qubit, or quantum bit, is the basic unit of information and the physical object that stores the information.
It all seems counterintuitive. Yet quantum computing applications quicken computations that require complex processing of information; allowing us to solve previously intractable scientific problems. We’re expecting a radical growth in quantum computer-based AI, data encryption, data security and more.
Post-quantum cryptography
There is a flip side to that promise. Sufficiently powerful quantum computers could compromise widely used public-key cryptography, creating a significant security challenge across organisations.
Solutions can be found in post-quantum cryptography, or quantum security which write algorithms capable of running on classical computer hardware that are secure against the computations possible in quantum computers.
As organisations prepare for the transition to quantum-safe security, we’re already helping clients assess risk, plan migration strategies and implement post-quantum cryptography in real-world systems. As an NCSC Assured Service Provider for PQC, we combine deep technical expertise with practical experience to help organisations build resilience against future quantum threats.

Quantum engineering
Quantum technologies are opening up new ways to measure, communicate and interact with the world around us, with emerging opportunities spanning sensing, communications, position, navigation and timing (PNT). Turning the promise of quantum physics into real-world capabilities requires a combination of quantum understanding and engineering realism.
In communications, the opportunity is evolving beyond individual technologies towards a broader vision for quantum networking. Quantum key distribution (QKD) remains part of this landscape, using the laws of quantum mechanics to protect data transmission. But future quantum networks could enable capabilities that cannot be achieved through conventional communications alone.
Putting that physics to work is hard. Realising practical quantum networks means overcoming challenges around scale, reliability, performance and integration with the wider communications infrastructure around them.
The same combination of quantum science and engineering is required in sensing applications. Quantum sensors could offer greater capabilities, but that is only part of the opportunity. New sensing technologies could also be more resilient, flexible and adaptable; they could become smaller, reach places existing sensors cannot, or detect things that couldn’t previously be measured.
Achieving this transformational leap in capability is far from straightforward. Developing practical quantum communications and sensing systems requires deep expertise in both the underlying physics and the engineering needed to deploy robust technologies in the real world.
Even more importantly, it requires understanding where these new capabilities address a genuine need. By combining knowledge of markets and applications with an understanding of emerging quantum technologies, we can identify where quantum could offer meaningful advantage, rather than applying quantum technology for its own sake.
What is quantum technology?
Quantum technology harnesses the unusual behaviour of matter and energy at the smallest scales to create new ways to compute, sense and communicate. What makes this moment significant is our increasing ability to control and manipulate that quantum world, turning extraordinary physics into practical technological possibilities.
For quantum technology to achieve the transformational benefits it promises, it needs to be applied in just the right places in just the right way. We help bring clarity to a complex and fast-moving landscape, identifying the near-, mid- and long-term commercial opportunities and where emerging quantum capabilities could offer something genuinely valuable.
How we can help you
Strategic planning and innovation management
We can help you understand the feasibility and value of quantum solutions. There are a lot of extraordinary claims in quantum technology. Some are real, some are not. Our experts can establish their veracity, identify where quantum capabilities could create value in your market, advise on if, how and when they might affect your business, and what to do about it.
Quantum design
We’ll tailor quantum solutions to your opportunity, defining the right system requirements in the context of your unique challenge. By combining quantum understanding with practical engineering expertise, we look beyond the quantum component itself to the wider technologies and systems required to turn emerging capability into a viable solution.

Optics labOur suite of optics labs enable us to build complex and high-precision optical layouts, typically for testing prototype designs and novel techniques before deployment. Featuring six high-spec optical benches with configurable interlocked controlled areas for high-power (class 4) laser work and specialist facilities for interferometry, spectroscopy, low-noise fluorescence imaging and photon counting. This space can be split into separate laser-controlled areas, allowing multiple experiments to run simultaneously, giving our optical engineers the capability to develop creative solutions without instrumentation restrictions |

Digital labWith one petabyte local storage and specialised hardware for telecoms chassis design, machine learning development and more, this facility allows us to develop, test and operate new cloud-ready digital services rapidly in a secure environment. It enables rapid end-to-end prototyping and experimentation of sensitive concepts. We work across the full spectrum of cloud service providers, supporting both public and private infrastructures. |

EMC test chamberOur fully shielded ETS-Lindgren anechoic test chamber is suitable for a wide range of EMC and RF testing, which is essential for new devices. It allows our consultants to test for unwanted radiation and susceptibility to interference at an early stage. Results can then be fed directly into product design, rather than later on when changes are expensive to implement. |
